In the western states there are a number of scenic railroads known as "heritage railroads" or "excursion railroads." They're not meant to get you from one place to another, they're only meant to show you some amazing scenery for a few hours, and maybe stop somewhere interesting for a while. In Colorado there are three, which I've wanted to ride for years but hadn't found the time, until now, when I finally took the opportunity to experience two of those three.

The Texas Eclipse festival could have been the biggest and most perfect festival I've ever seen. Not only would a total solar eclipse happen on the last day, but it had the most stacked musical lineup I've ever seen, along with an equally-impressive lineup of guest speakers giving some interesting talks. For those of us who often go to festivals, this should have been our Woodstock, but from what I heard later, it was turning into a repeat of that other Woodstock which isn't so fondly-remembered, which may be why it was unexpectedly canceled on the morning of the last day.

I'd gotten a glimpse of Georgia's capital and largest city back in 2021, arriving by bus at night, desperately looking for dinner downtown, and flying out the next morning. I wasn't impressed; I was walking around downtown looking for someplace to eat and frustratedly found everything closed down. Considering this is one of the largest cities in the country, I found this really disappointing, especially since I'd just visited Savannah and Charleston. But I knew there must be much more that I wasn't seeing and that it deserved a second look. This time, I was impressed.

Savannah is one of my favorite American cities to visit. I saw this city once, for two days, back in 2021 right after that year's Suwannee Hulaween festival in Florida. So since I was going to Hulaween again in 2023, and wanted to do some post-festival trips in the following week, there was never a question Savannah would be the first stop. Especially since I'd read the "non-fiction novel" Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil and wanted to see some of the places where scenes in the book were set.
