And finally, after almost a whole week in Ontario, mostly spent in the city of Toronto, the trip was almost over and the day had arrived for my flight out. But the trip wasn't over yet, and there were a couple more interesting things left to do before flying home.

September 10, 2017 was the day I set aside for TIFF, the Toronto International Film Festival. Thursday I had acquired a magazine-size program which contained all the schedules and film descriptions, and by now I'd settled on four films I thought looked interesting. There was one ticket office where I had to buy my tickets from, and from there I had to head to the various locations where the films were actually being shown. After the previous day's Spartan Beast obstacle race, being able to spend several hours sitting was a welcome break from the usual constant walking of trips like this.

And now on Saturday, September 9, it was time for the ostensible reason I was in Toronto: the Spartan Ontario Beast! Since the race was in the afternoon, I decided to fuel up that morning by having a generous helping of oatmeal with breakfast, and then followed that up with some pastries and doughnuts that I normally avoid. But finding the place turned out to be a challenge. I drove up to the town of Barrie (pronounced like the name "Barry") and then spent too much time driving in circles looking for Highlands Nordic. Since, as always, I had data roaming on my phone turned off, I couldn't just take out my phone and look it up on Google Maps. I actually had to stop and ask a few people for directions. But, I eventually found the place.

On this day I'd decided I wanted to go check out a smaller city in the area. After all, I was paying for a rental car, so may as well use it for something. I wanted to check out Kitchener and London, but only had time for one. I decided to go with Kitchener, since it was known for having German heritage (it was originally named Berlin and changed during the first World War), and I naturally assumed I could go to a Biergarten and get a nice frothy mug of German lager. Big mistake that was. You know what they say happens when you assume...
